Rutenberg Chamber Music Series: Chang / Sun Duo
Violinist Elizabeth Chang and pianist Jiayan Sun bring their long-standing artistic partnership to a program built around the architecture of variation. Beethoven's Sonata No. 8 and Schubert's Fantasie in C major, D. 934, sit at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum - one lean, one expansive - yet both composers share a fascination with tightly structured designs and a drive to exhaust the potential of a single musical idea. Salvatore Macchia's Fantasy Variations, written for and premiered by Chang and Sun, carries that same thread of invention into the present day, a contemporary voice born from this musical language.
